Dealing with Non-Friendly Vegan & Vegetarian Phrases

One of the things I constantly work with is having compassion for others. But sometimes being vegetarian around meat eaters that are fanatics of eating meat makes it a good exercise of patience.

Several times a week I get from the people I interact either online or offline one of the phrases I really have begun to hate with passion is:

” You don’t know what you are missing by eating meat”

There are a series of phrases that are clearly annoying to many vegetarians especially in the Hispanic/Latino Community. Here are a few and some of them are in spanish so they don’t lose their value if you have questions feel free to ask them in the comments area.

” There is nothing better than biting into a Churrasco”

” Go ahead have a little bit of pork won’t hurt you” | Pero bendito si un poquito de lechon no te va hacer daño

” I am vegetarian I only eat animals that eat vegetables”

” What are we going to do with the Cows if we don’t eat them”

” Here have fish that is vegetarian right”

” O but I already served you this plate of Shrimp that is vegetarian right, You are not going to let them go to waste now”

” It would offend me if you don’t eat what we serve you, its only this time where asking you to have a bite”

The one that tops follows my most hated phrase

” Oh but you are Puerto Rican ( feel free to add or substitute any nationality) and you don’t eat meat how can that be”

I have many indian friends that are not vegetarian the same way I have many vegetarian friends from every nationality you can imagine. Nationality or race has nothing to do with the style of life you choose much less with what you decide to eat.

What are phrases that annoy you as a vegetarian? Feel free to share them with us in the comments area?

Quoting the comedian Jim Gaffigan, “I am a vegetarian, but not a strict vegetarian. I do eat beef and pork. But not fish, that’s disgusting.”

A conversation with a hospital nutritionist (while visiting my hubby, a patient) after asking the cafeteria lady for their vegetarian meal options.me…. Do the beans have lard?nutritionist…. No, we use vegetable oil to refry them.me…. Are you sure? did you make them fresh?nutritionist…. No. They are from a can.me…. Could you read the label to be sure?*nutritionist goes to kitchen and emerges with can of beans*nutritionist…. These are okay…it only has 2% lard.*head desk*I had to laugh at her ignorance. I ended up with their only vegetarian option…. shredded romaine and a couple of slices of tomato.
