Animal Welfare of Culebra’s TSP (trap, spay-neuter, release) Project

Best Toy Nature Could provide a Black Labrador like Juanga

We are always willing to help any animal that comes our way or any organization that dedicates itself to helping strays. Terrie  who volunteers at the Animal Welfare of Culebra posted this today on their Facebook Wall about a TSP Project  (Trap, Spay-Neuter, Release) going on in May.

Here are the details and contact Terrie or Animal Welfare of Culebra for more information:

” Animal Welfare of Culebra (AWC) in partnership with the Humane Society of PR, All Sato Rescue, The Animal Project, Island Dog, the Municipality of Culebra, & others is sponsoring a large-scale TNR (trap, spay-neuter, release) program on Culebra.

We have identified 5 areas to target for stray cats (one including Flamenco beach) & will be trapping, sterilizing, vaccinating, treating for medical issues, & then releasing back to live as a healthy, managed colonies.

We’ll have several veterinarians on island & vet techs as well as experts in TRN from the states & are seeking folks to help with a variety of jobs (catching, trapping, cleaning cages, feeding, watering, labeling, etc.).

This project will be ongoing from May 2-8 (surgeries on May 5 & 6th) & we’ll need folks helping from the 2nd (truck arriving from main island with supplies to unload/secure at La Cancha Bajo Techo-gym across from Palmetto) & then starting on the 3rd, catching & trapping-thus feeding, & cleaning.

This project can have a big impact on Culebra for the animals & people! Please won’t you offer a hand?

Satito looking for an Owner

One of our contributor’s here at Veglatino,  @AnaLovebug,  posted a picture of a male dog who is three months old that is looking for a home. He is up-to-date with vaccinations and is ready to bring love to your family. If you or someone you know is searching for a new family member to cuddle with, I know this is your guy.

For those who don’t know what a sato is, it is the term in Spanish for a mixed-bred dog. You can contact Ana or Jose for more information through Twitter @jpadilla_ or leave a comment on the website and we can direct your inquiry to Ana.

Thanks to @Analovebug for the picture!

Dogs ready for adoption at Animal Welfare of Culebra

If you have visited this blog before or read about how much we love our dog on any of the various blogs we run, than you know that helping save dogs from the streets tugs at our heart strings. During the early stages of my pregnancy I cried uncontrollably because we saw over ten dogs and puppies under the highway near a shopping mall in Ponce, Puerto Rico. We came back with dog food a week later and left it there for them to eat.

But the folks at Animal Welfare of Culebra do much more than that for the stray dogs and cats on the small island of Culebra, Puerto Rico. They rescue, nurse, love, and unite stray dogs and cats that come to their doorstep with families looking for a new family member. Recently I had  @Mark_Hayward send me information about the dogs that are currently ready for adoption. You can read one of the success stories where Mark and @Alyssa_Milano used Twitter to find Lilly a home. (Yes that Alyssa Milano)

Without further ado, here are the two dogs Mark and his wife Terrie are currently fostering. Help them find a new home! For more details you can go to Animal Welfare of Culebra on Facebook as well.

Teaching Juanga (Black Labrador) Sign Language

I am in search of a sign language coach for Juanga. My four-legged son Juanga  was accused by one of my neighbors (anonymous note was left) of barking all night long. The part that makes it a false accusation is that the neighbor stated that Juanga woud not let them sleep all night because of his barking.
Juanga is not the perfect dog and with the help of someone like Cesar Milan we might be able to  fix many things like the following:
  • Chewing on Furniture
  • Destroying Futons (He only did it once but I am sure if we bought another one and gave Juanga some time with it he would repeat his infamous act).
  • Eating Daniela’s Food
  • Eating my Food
  • Serving as Daniela’s Napkin (although Daniela has no complaints she actually smiles when this happens)
  • Taking my Shoes outside (he does less of this)
  • Taking my Space on the Bed
  • Crying because he wants to go into the Air Conditioning
  • Crying because we have not gone to bed
  • Eating Duct Tape
Overall, barking all night is just not Juanga’s thing.  A typical night for Juanga is at around 10pm crying and whining so we can open the door to our bedroom so he can go to bed. Being able to sleep under our feet is something that Juanga looks forward to.
If Juanga really barked all night it would be impossible for Daniela, me, and Lucy to sleep. Instead of barking Juanga rather recharge energy  throughout the night for all the mischief of his regular dog days (digging holes, chasing birds, and running up and down the stairs).

What does this have to do with Veglatino?

In Puerto Rico, there is a huge issue with animal abuse. One of my neighbors even suggested that I put a collar that gives him electrical shocks so he would not bark. People here see dogs as wild animals that should be left outside tied somewhere and thrown food at them.

My biggest worry is that in Puerto Rico it is normal for neighbors to poison a dog just because he barks or it bothers them. On an Island where Politicians and some businesses run loud ads thru the streets to get attention creating noise pollution and nobody complains, it makes it hard for me to understand how the bark of a dog can be a big deal.

There are several reasons why a dog will bark especially one like JuanGa: Someone is close to the house, he sees a threat to the property, he needs food, water, or to go to the bathroom, or even maybe to lie down in the grass to soak up some sun.

Our Island is a place where material things are more important than a living being. It is ok to have a car that sounds like a jumbo jet engine but a poor dog barking deserves to die or to be put to sleep.

As part of Veglatino’s purposes we will be sharing stories related to animal abuse and how the mentality of many islanders is more inclined towards animal abuse.  It is great that organizations like Sasfa (animal no Kill shelter) and Culebra Animal Wealthfare foundation exist but we need many more of them because we have many more idiots who are firm believers in abusing dogs for nor legitimate reasons.
For now I will be looking into a Dog Whisperer that can teach dogs how to whisper or do sign language. In the meanwhile the two mentioned organizations need your help with donations. The Island mentality makes it very difficult for our four legged friends to have a good life and these two organizations do everything possible to make their lives better. Feel free to send a donation or if you are in the island serve as a volunteer.

Come Volunteer @SASFAPR at the Pet Fair!

One of the organizations we love to promote is the “no kill” shelter in Puerto Rico called @SASFAPR. Home to 300 animals that have been saved from being killed and abandonment, they have been cordially invited to an event in the southern part of the island.

From July 13th to July 17, they will be in Ponce, Puerto Rico’s Plaza del Caribe at a Pet Fair. According to Dellymar, who is the President of this great organization, they need volunteers to help with their booth.

They are scheduled to be at the fair from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on July 13 and 14th. July 15th through the 17th they will be there from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Volunteers should be able to commit to three hours where you will hand out adoption and donation information while also accepting food donations and passing out information on how to be a responsible pet owner.

Please send an email to Dellymar at delly018@yahoo.com if you are visiting the island or living here and would like to contribute your time to a great cause.

UPDATE: From the Animal Welfare of Culebra > Two puppies adopted! 9 to go & many GREAT dogs available!
Let’s hope that the other nine puppies and dogs at the facility are rescued. 3-30-2011

Today we were notified by @Mark_Hayward via twitter that 11 puppies were abandoned and rescued by him and his wife Terrie. Here is what Mark stated to us,

“The pups were dumped on the road as you head towards Zoni Beach on Culebra. Terrie brought to the vet in Fajardo yesterday for de-worming and vaccines. There are tons of pics on Animal Welfare of Culebra Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Animal-Welfare-of-Culebra

If people want to adopt we do a very thorough screening process — check with their vet, etc. Also, Animal Welfare of Culebra is 100 percent support by donations so if people want to help out they can donate by following this link - http://animalwelfareculebra.org/support/

This picture touches our heart in a profound way because we have a black labrador at home. Please forward this post to all of those who may be interested.

Veggie Dog

Title is probably not what you are thinking about; vegetarian soy dog with all the trimmings such as onions, ketchup, sauerkraut, mustard, and maybe mushrooms. I am talking about vegetables and giving them to your four-legged friend the canine.

When we welcomed our dog into our home, one of the things I researched the type of human food to give to our dog along with dog food. Since canines are omnivores, I knew that giving him meat in our vegetarian home was not going to happen. I wanted to provide him with other options besides the dog food we were going to be purchasing.

I read on www.webmd.com for pets that there were certain foods you could give your pets and others that were definitely a NO! After reading the list, we bought carrots with our grocery.

I decided to give our black Labrador JuanGa a piece of carrot. He loved the crunch and I would give him a whole carrot. Along with carrots, potatoes, and peas, he loves fruits such as apples, oranges, mangoes, and blueberries. But he is not too fond of the mushy banana.

The vegetables that you should avoid are garlic, onions, avocados, along with sweets, certain spices, certain fruits, and chocolate. On occasion JuanGa will wait for a grape or piece of onion to fall on the floor. We make sure to pick them up quickly in order to avoid any unexpected visits to the veterinarian.

If you have a dog, what type of foods does he love to eat besides dog food?

What organic pet food brands are there for dogs?

Here is the slide show of things to avoid and feed your dog.
